What to Expect at Your First Breakthrough Session

If you've never experienced an alternative therapy session before, you may not know exactly what to expect and that's completely normal.
You may be wondering: Will I have to talk about everything I've been through? Will I have to relive painful memories? What exactly happens during a Breakthrough Session?
The short answer is: probably not what you expect.
A Breakthrough Session is not about spending hours analyzing your past. Instead, we focus on understanding the patterns behind what you're experiencing and using techniques designed to help you create meaningful change.
Here's what you can expect before, during, and after your first session.
Before Your Breakthrough Session: How to Prepare
You don't need to prepare a perfect explanation of your problem or bring a detailed timeline of everything that's happened in your life. In fact, you don't need to have all the answers.
What is helpful is spending a little time thinking about what you would like to be different.
Ask yourself:
What brought me to this session?
What belief, emotion, reaction, or pattern would I like to change?
How does this show up in my life today?
What would I like to experience instead?
If this problem were no longer controlling my response, what would be different?
You may want to write down a few thoughts beforehand but it’s not required or necessary., Don't worry about creating an elaborate journal entry. We will explore what we need to during the session.
Come With an Open Mind
A Breakthrough Session may feel different from traditional therapy.
You may be asked questions that seem unusual. You may be asked to pay attention to how you think about something rather than simply describing what happened. You may participate in visualization, guided exercises, or other techniques designed to work with the automatic patterns of your mind.
You don't have to understand exactly why every question is being asked for the process to be useful.
Your job is simply to be curious, honest, and willing to participate.
What Happens During the Breakthrough Session?
1. We Start With the Problem
We'll begin by talking about what's bringing you in. I'll ask questions to understand what you're experiencing, gather examples, and learn what you'd like to change. But this isn't about spending the entire session telling your story, unless you feel you need to. Some people like to share their story, others share only small details. Either way, the story isn’t what we’re interested in and rather the behavior, how you do it, and how often.
In other words, we're interested in the problem—but we're even more interested in how your mind is creating and maintaining it.
2. We Look at Your Internal Pattern
This is where the session starts to become different from what you may have experienced before.
Instead of only asking "What happened?", we'll explore questions like:
How do you experience this internally?
What do you think about?
What do you picture?
What do you say to yourself?
What emotions show up?
What triggers the response?
How does your mind automatically move from one thought or feeling to another?
We're looking for the structure behind the experience—the automatic patterns that can influence how you think, feel, and respond.
3. We Explore Where the Pattern Came From
Once we understand how the pattern works, we may explore experiences that contributed to it. This doesn't mean you have to sit and relive every painful detail.
The purpose is to understand the experiences and emotional associations connected to the pattern we're working with. Your past provides information. It doesn't have to become the place where you stay.
4. We Begin the Transformation
Once we've identified the pattern we're working with and the greater problem, I'll guide you through the appropriate process for your session.
Depending on what we're addressing, this may incorporate Mental Emotional Release®, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), guided visualization, self-reflection, or other techniques.
These approaches work with the deeper, automatic patterns of your mind—the ones that influence how you think, feel, and respond. The goal isn't simply to understand why you feel a certain way. It's to create a shift in how you experience it.
5. We Check the Change
Throughout the process, we'll pay attention to what has changed. You may notice that a memory feels different. An emotion may no longer have the same intensity. A belief may feel less convincing. A situation that once triggered a strong reaction may suddenly feel more neutral.
Everyone experiences a breakthrough differently. There isn't one particular sensation you're supposed to have. What matters is the change you experience in relation to the issue we came in to address.
What If I Don't Know Exactly What I Want?
That's okay. You don't have to walk through the door with everything figured out.
Part of our initial conversation is identifying what you'd like to change and what you want your experience to be instead. Sometimes the thing you initially think is the problem isn't actually the deeper pattern.
That's why we explore.
Do I Have to Talk About My Trauma?
No.
You may discuss experiences that are relevant to what you're working on, but the purpose isn't to make you repeatedly relive painful events.
A Breakthrough Session isn't traditional talk therapy where the goal is to spend the session processing your entire history. Instead, we gather the information we need and then shift our focus toward the patterns, beliefs, emotions, and responses you want to change.
What Happens After the Session?
Your work doesn't necessarily end when the session does.
Depending on what we've addressed, you may receive specific exercises or practices to complete afterward. These are designed to support the work we've done during the session and help you integrate the changes into everyday life.
You'll also be encouraged to pay attention to what you notice after the session. Sometimes change is immediately obvious.
Sometimes you notice it later when you encounter a situation that would normally trigger an old response—and realize you're responding differently.
What a Breakthrough Session Is—and Isn't
A Breakthrough Session isn't about fixing something that's "wrong" with you. You aren't broken.
It's about identifying patterns that may have once served a purpose but are no longer helping you move forward. It's also not about forcing yourself to think positively or simply telling yourself to "let it go."
Instead, we work with the way your mind already processes experiences, beliefs, and emotions. And because every person and every pattern is different, every Breakthrough Session is different too.
Come Curious. Leave Different.
You don't need to know exactly how the process works before you experience it. You don't need to have the perfect words. And you don't need to be ready to tell your entire life story.
You simply need to be willing to explore what you're experiencing and open to the possibility that change may not require you to keep reliving the past.
A Breakthrough Session is an opportunity to look at what's happening beneath the surface, work with the patterns that are influencing your experience, and begin creating a different way forward.
Your story may explain where you came from. It doesn't have to determine where you go next.
